Growing up on our family farm I spent much of my youth learning to irrigate, driving a water truck and forklift, chopping cotton, picking and selling corn, grapes and other fruits and vegetables, stacking pallets of potato sacks, helping move cotton trailers, and other work on the farm. It was a lot of fun, and these things taught me the value of hard work.
The whole town of Queen Creek often got together for community activities such as the Fourth of July fireworks. The town would gather on the softball field behind the church on Ellsworth Road which is now the Town Hall. We would have a big picnic with watermelon provided by Newell Barney and there would be games and visiting with all of our friends and neighbors. Living in a small town taught me the importance of a strong sense of community.
Running a farm was hard work for my grandparents and parents but finding time for family was always important. We spent a lot of time together going to the lake, out to eat, attending church, traveling, and my grandfather often took us flying in his airplane. My parents were always supportive of any of our school or church activities. We would travel to town (Mesa) each week to spend time with family there as well. Growing up so close to family filled me with love and the importance of knowing where I come from.
